The Process

There’s a lot of confusion and inconsistency out there when it comes to rates for editing and proofreading.  You can find people who charge by the hour, the word, the page, or the project—with all kinds of add-ons, minimum fees, and upcharges to make things even more complicated.*

Not here.  Nope.  I like to keep things short, sweet, simple, and easy to understand.

Because after setting up a website, marketing yourself, writing a blog, and all of the other million-and-one things you need to do for your business, the last thing you want to do is try to understand the nuances of editing.

Rather than try to make you learn the differences between “basic proofreading,” “copyediting,” and “substantive editing,” or try to guess how many hours you think your project will take (“How fast or slow is she, anyway?”), I want to make it easy for you.

Just contact me for a quick & easy (and free) 15-minute consultation.  You describe what you need done, and I’ll send you a proposal by e-mail the same day.  Depending on the project, I may ask you to send a small sample.  But other than that, that’s it.  You’ll know the costs (and time frame for completion) ahead of time, rather than trying to guesstimate how much to budget or how long it will take.

Isn’t it nice when things are simple?

*A word about finding an editor on the web:  If you do a Google search on editing and proofreading, you may be tempted by super-low per word rates.  I’ve checked out what’s out there, and can assure you that you really do get what you pay for.  Some of those sweatshop-type editing mills that promise bargain rates have typos and bad grammar right on their websites.  And do you really want to send the blog post you spent two hours writing off to another country to be edited for 5 bucks by someone you spent another hour finding on eLance or oDesk?

If you value what you’ve written (and your time!), please send it to a professional!  As a writer myself, I know how much effort it takes to put your heart on that page, and I will treat your work with tender loving care.
